Sunday’s scheduled fixtures against Heighington and Grainthorpe both fell foul of the wet weather, without a ball being bowled in either game.

26th May 2007

Teenagers Ricky Drury and Sam Deptford struck maiden half centuries for Boston Cricket Club on Saturday as the Third XI maintained their position at the top of SLBL Division Two with a 34-run win over Long Sutton.

Drury (65) and Deptford (59) shared a fourth wicket partnership of 100 as Boston posted 198 off 45 overs. In reply, three run-outs helped restrict the hosts to 164-8 and secured 18 points out of 20 for Boston. Kevin Brooks, Steffen Cook, Haydn Roberts, Azeem Qadir and Dave Gilding all took one wicket apiece, while youngster Matthew Hood produced a faultless display behind the stumps.

The First XI were beaten by six wickets against Market Deeping. Six Boston batsmen reached the 20-mark, but nobody went on to post a big score as the home side closed on 202-8. In reply, Dan Milgate’s 2-53 led the way, but with Colin Cheer and Mickey Troops also claiming scalps, the visitors reached their target for the loss of just four wickets, with more than seven overs remaining.

A re-jigged Second XI suffered a heavy defeat at Market Deeping. After scoring just 103, Boston claimed two wickets in reply, but it was not enough. Gareth Epton, Rob Grant, Luke Gilding and Wills Barker each notched double figures, while Scott Elleray and Epton claimed wickets later in the day.

Boston will travel to Skegness in round two, who edged out Graves Park in their first round match on Monday.

21st May 2007

In a low-scoring encounter at Nocton, Boston got life in the Lincoln League off to a winning start. After skittling Nocton for just 62, Boston staggered to 64-6 to claim 20 much-needed points.

Scott Elleray (three), Tatu Vehvilainen (two) and Dan Milgate (two) were the bowling heroes, while Gareth Epton’s 40 not out with the bat laid the platform in reply.

Elsewhere, Jonathan Cheer scored 86 not out as Boston’s East Lindsey XI chased down a decent total at Alford. The hosts were bowled out for 162, with Matthew Poole (3-35) and Tim Bell (2-34) leading the way with the ball.

In reply, Cheer carried his bat and was assisted by Dave Gilding (15) and skipper Lee Brooks (26) as Boston cruised past their victory target.

19th May 2007

The First XI suffered a humiliating defeat at Sleaford on Saturday, being bowled out for just 56 in reply to the home side’s total of 247-7.

Boston endured a terrible afternoon and dropped a staggering nine catches as the hosts ran riot at London Road. Mickey Troops (three), Colin Cheer (two) and John Morris (two) claimed wickets, but Dan Milgate saw five chances dropped off his bowling.

In reply, Boston were reduced to 32-9, before Colin Cheer and John Morris put on 24 for the final wicket. Jonathan Cheer top scored with 13, as Boston claimed just three bonus points from an afternoon to forget.

At the Mayflower, Boston and Sleaford did battle at Second XI level. With four ex-Bostonians in their top five, Sleaford posted 237-5 off 45 overs, with Andrew Wilson scoring 125. Boston’s wicket-takers were Tim Bell (two), Scott Elleray, Nic Stone and Gareth Epton.

In reply, Stone fired an unbeaten 76, but Boston fell short in their chase and closed on 197-8. Dave Gilding was the other man to make a mark with the bat, adding 30 to the total.

The Third XI added some much-needed cheer though, securing a satisfying victory over a ‘chirpy’ Heckington outfit. Boston restricted Heckington to 178-8 off 45 overs, with John Elleray and JP Horton claiming two wickets apiece. Youngster Matthew Poole also claimed his first scalp in senior cricket.

In reply, Boston slumped to 82-6, but an excellent stand of 75 between Elleray and Steffen Cook revived their hopes and it was then left to skipper Kevin Brooks to mark his 47th birthday by hitting the winning runs to finally silence the visitors.
